My Not At All Secret Garden

Landscaping update June 25th, 2021

So after our landscaper had to take some time off to do sprinkler work all over the city he and his crew came back and finished all of their tasks. Beds have been planted and seeded. Drip irrigation and fine mist sprinklers have been installed. And touch-ups were done to rock beds. Meanwhile, we have bought some decorations to personalize the space even more. Here you can see the before and after, then I’ll go into a little tour of the place in detail.

So in the first bed on the right, we have a trellis with birds on it behind our new birdbath. Water is very scarce here so we have already had lots of critters of every sort coming for a drink. This bed has three bushes and three decorative types of grass. On the left with the purple leaves is I think a smoke bush, there wasn’t a tag sadly. Next towards the front is a hybrid hydrangea. Just behind and to the right of that is a little blue fescue grass. To the right of the birdbath is a burning bush, a second little blue fescue, and ornamental grass that also wasn’t labeled. I think I’ve seen them around town though and if I’m right it will get to be 4-5 feet tall.

In the flower bed closest to the house on the right we have native wildflowers seed planted in the back and a pretty ground cover called stonecrop, you can just make out its purple leaves.

In the bed closer to the street we have a ground cover in front, creeping thyme. In the back are a few veronicas which aren’t doing great, the sun is really intense and even though they said they wanted full sun I think they may not make it.

The two beds in the “hell strip” in the very front are all lower denser growing wildflowers.

The right also has our new Buddha statue. (yay!!) and hopefully, soon we will be getting a bridge we ordered to go over the dry creek.

Then on the left in the mulched bed closest to the house we have our pretty spring snow crabapple tree and two more of the tall grasses.

The bed in front of that is wildflowers in the back and a red breed of stonecrop mixed with a special breed of ice plant that was developed right here in Colorado!

This side also features our little spirit house.

We got two sizes of bamboo wood chimes that make a lovely but also soft sound so as not to drive our neighbors crazy.

We got a new porch light that flickers like a flame lantern.

These little lights on shepherd's crooks also have a flame flicker to them at night and help make the path safer to navigate.

We got three of these cute little solar color change lights that are butterfly-shaped.

Also in the two mulched beds, we have lights that mimic fireflies!

We got two plastic rocking chairs from a hardware store I’m in the middle of painting, which will be in the next blog post along with our final set of path lights. It so nice to have such a nice garden to look at and it will be super cool to see it next year as everything continues to grow and bloom! This was a massive undertaking and it took us several years to save up for it but we are super happy with the results! Also, it has been fun watching pedestrians and cars slow down to check it out! By next year we should only have to water on very rare occasions too so we look forward to that savings.
