Spring is here and so is the landscaping!

When my husband and I bought our house a while back one of the things we knew we wanted to change was the front landscaping or lack thereof. There were three little patches of lawn and one big patch and two pine trees. One of the pine trees was dead so we cut it down right away but the house has looked like this ever since.

As you can see it is about as plain as it gets. It also isn't smart in the dry climate we live in to have a bunch of bluegrass as it needs tons of water and thing really supports wildlife. We saved for several years and lucky for us this year we had enough for a big change. Lucky for us too because last year we had a very unfortunate spider mite infestation that killed half of the lawn anyway.
Our plan is to replace all of the lawn and driveway with xeriscaping through native plants and a few non-native but compatible plants. (xeriscaping is a landscape that is designed around low water use) There will be a path up to the front porch which will be easier to shovel in winter and a larger tree in front to help shade the house in summer. The plants will all be friendly to local wildlife and there will be water sources as well so hopefully, bees, butterflies, and birds will be frequent guests!
Additionally, I spend most of my days in a chair right next to the front windows and it will be so nice to see some living things instead of just a bunch of concrete!
Keep your eye on this blog to see daily progress updates! Also, I added this picture because I thought it was funny that they spray painted their ides onto the grass and driveway.

So the end of day 1 on 4/5/2021 saw the removal of the tree and all concrete and sod other than the concrete path alongside the house. This is so exciting I can't wait to see how this all goes!
